Cleveland Browns chatter: Joe Schobert contract extension
The Cleveland Browns will have to make a decision on whether or not to extend LB Joe Schobert. What will it take re-sign the 2016 third-round pick?
The Cleveland Browns are in the unfamiliar position of having to sign good players, and whether or not you think Joe Schobert qualifies as “good,” he’s a starting linebacker who’s a season away from free agency.
So, what would it take for the Browns to re-sign their 2016 third-round pick?
Cleveland.com’s Terry Pluto recently wrote about Schobert’s place on the team, reminding us that he’s making $2 million this season. In his opinion, Pluto added that Schobert might be looking for upward of $10 million per season when he signs his new contract.
Schobert can be a polarizing figure among die hard fans. Some view him as the quarterback of the defense, others view him as the guy who led the NFL in missed tackles (25).
The Browns look prepared to let him walk, evidenced by their selections of Mack Wilson and Sione Takitaki in last spring’s NFL Draft.
The front office is going to have to make up their mind on safety Damarious Randall, a player who may be thinking the grass is greener in free agency.
GM John Dorsey then will also start handing out mega-money by giving Myles Garret an extension. Then, it won’t be long until the clock starts running on offering extensions to Baker Mayfield and Denzel Ward.
These are good problems to have, Browns’ fans just aren’t used to keeping players through their rookie contract and then actually considering extending those players. Most first-round picks have flamed out by year four!
